Baseado no conto "História da Sua Vida" escrito em 1998 por Ted Chiang, o filme A Chegada foge do óbvio da ficção científica trazendo uma possível interpretação extraordinária de uma teoria linguística. No filme, a professora linguística Louise Banks, interpretada por Amy Adams, é chamada para tentar entrar em contato com alienígenas que chegaram a Terra. Diferentemente da maioria esmagadora, os ETs fleumáticos de A Chegada ficam lá, parados, sem reações ou intenções violentas apenas assistindo o mundo entrar em colapso. O filme dirigido por Denis Villeneuve e com roteiro de Eric Heisserer é uma obra-prima narrativa e visual sobre linguística e seu poder na vida do ser humano.
O livro "História da Sua Vida e Outros Contos" é uma coleção das primeiras oito histórias do escritor Ted Chiang, entre elas, o conto vencedor do Prêmio Nebula "História da Sua Vida". Publicado originalmente em 2002, o livro passou por uma reimpressão em 2016 como "Arrival" para coincidir com a adaptação.
O projeto é um redesing da obra de Chiang de 2016. Pensada para ser uma edição que estivesse à altura da direção de arte da adaptação cinematográfica, usei as mesmas inspirações que o diretor Patrice Vermette contou ter usado, como o livro de fotografia Speedway de Martina Hoogland Ivanow e os trabalhos do artista James Turrel.
Based on the 1998 short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, the film Arrival escapes the obvious of science fiction, bringing a possible extraordinary interpretation of a linguistic theory. In the film, language teacher Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, is called in to try to contact aliens who have arrived on Earth. Unlike the overwhelming majority, the phlegmatic ETs from Arrival are just watching the world collapse with no violent reactions or intentions. The film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer is a narrative and visual masterpiece about linguistics and its power in the life of the human being.
The book "Stories of Your Life and Others" is a collection of the first eight stories by the writer Ted Chiang, among them, the Nebula-winning science fiction novella "Story of Your Life". Originally published in 2002, it was reprinted in 2016 as Arrival to coincide with the adaptation.
My project is a redesign of Arrival book. Designed to be an deluxe edition that measure up to the art direction of the motion picture, using the same inspirations that production designer Patrice Vermette used, like Speedway by photographer Martina Hoogland Ivanow and the works of artist James Turrell.
Em certa cena do filme, um momento muito tenso que marca talvez o ápice da comunicação entre a Dra. Banks e os heptapods, todos os símbolos podem ser vistos simultaneamente. A imagem criada para a folha de guarda do livro foi inspirada nesta cena. Você pode ver o processo de criação usando todas as quarenta variações dos símbolos no meu Instagram.
In the scene that perhaps marks the most tense moment of communication between Banks and heptapods, it is possible to see all the symbols at the same time. The image created for the endsheet was inspired by this moment. You can see the creation process using all forty variations of the symbols on my Instagram.
